Wu Chi-Tsung (b. 1981, Taipei) graduated from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2004 and is currently based in Taipei. His practice encompasses photography, video, installation, and experimental ink art, with a particular focus on reinterpreting traditional Asian art in contemporary contexts and on the dynamic nature of the image across technology, medium, and perception.
Grounded in temporality, materiality, and the act of viewing, his work explores how perception is formed and where the limits of sensory awareness lie. He utilized xuan paper, nineteenth-century cyanotype techniques, and contemporary methods to develop a distinctive visual language that interwines temporal structures with physical layers. Through these explorations, Wu reflects on the emergence and dissolution of images, responding to humanity’s pursuit of vision, history, and reality in the age of images.
Wu’s practice does not treat East and West, old and new, or tradition and the contemporary as opposites; rather, it moves fluidly between them, extending and transforming across their boundaries. From analogue to digital, he examines how images in a rapidly shifting environment preserve, reconstruct, or rewrite the realities they once embodied. He investigates how modes of image production shape perception and memory, focusing on the recording of light, the variations that arise through reproduction, and the reconfiguration of visual experience under technological intervention.
His work frequently explores the boundaries between reality and simulacra, memory and representation, while negotiating the tension between chance and order, nature and technology. At the same time, he takes calligraphy as a point of departure to explore the relationship between the body and brushwork, engaging traditional East Asian culture to reveal how they are reinterpreted and renewed amid the rapid transformations of the present age. Through sustained observation and experimentation, Wu continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary Asian art within a global and cross-cultural context.
Wu has received numerous awards, including the Taipei Arts Award (2003), the Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines at the WRO Media Art Biennale (2013), and the Liu Kuo Sung Ink Art Award (2019). He has also been shortlisted for the Artes Mundi (UK, 2006) and the Prudential Eye Awards (UK, 2015). His works are held in major public and private collections, including M+ (Hong Kong), the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing), the UBS Art Collection, and Fidelity International.
Wu’s solo exhibitions have been presented at institutions such as the Katonah Museum of Art (USA). He has also participated in major international art fairs and platforms, including Art Basel in Basel (Unlimited sector), Art Basel Miami Beach (Meridians sector), Art Basel Hong Kong, and The ADAA Art Show (New York). His major group exhibitions include The Elegance of Silence: Contemporary Art From East Asia (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo), the Shanghai Biennale (Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai), CAFAM Future (CAFA Art Museum, Beijing), Panorámica. Paisajes 2013–1969 (Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City), Phantom of Civilization (Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain, Luxembourg), JING SHEN – The Act of Painting in Contemporary China (PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan), and Between Warp and Weft at the 9th Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture (Shenzhen). He has also participated in residency programs at Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), the Asian Cultural Council (New York), and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (Manchester).
